09.11.01 Memorial Plaza

Urban Design Studio had the honor of participating in the project management, landscape design and construction of a memorial plaza dedicated in honor of the victims of the terrorist attacks of 9/11/01. With the plaza shaped to emulate the fireman’s Maltese cross, the centerpiece is a 36’ tall steel beam from Tower II of the World Trade Center in New York City. The steel is flanked by eight 8’ tall glass panels that are etched with the names of the victims. The plaza was designed to use ecologically sensitive and sustainable elements including permeable pavers and solar electrical panels, and utilized reused palm trees that were donated by the Town of Palm Beach. Although the setting of the plaza is in an urban area in front of Fire Station No. 3, it is a reverent peaceful place, buffered by a grassy berm and shaded by multiple palm trees. Educational plaques outlining the history of the events of 9/11/01.
